Set up Alps in Schoology

Alps by 2Sigma is an LTI 1.3 app in the Schoology App Center. Once it is set up, teachers and students open Alps from their Schoology course with no separate sign-in, the course roster comes into Alps, and Alps coursework gets Schoology gradebook columns whose scores sync back automatically (see step 6).

A Schoology admin and an Alps organization admin do steps 1 and 2 once for the school. Step 3 adds Alps to courses, and teachers do steps 4 to 6 for each course.

Before you start

1

Install Alps from the App Center

Schoology System Administrator

  1. In Schoology, open the App Center and search for Alps by 2Sigma.
  2. On the app’s page, click Install LTI 1.3 App. Schoology asks you to agree to share data with Alps for sign-in, rosters and grades. Click I Agree, then Add to Organization.
  3. Go to App Center > Organization Apps, find Alps by 2Sigma and click Configure. Copy the Deployment ID. It looks like 8617959790-1234567890: the Alps client ID, a hyphen, then your school’s ID.
2

Connect Schoology in Alps

Alps organization admin

  1. Sign in to Alps, open your organization’s page and click LMS Integration. Next to Schoology, click Connect (or Show Details if Schoology is already connected).
  2. Enter these values and click Save:
    • Schoology Domain: https://schoology.schoology.com. Enter exactly this, even if your district signs in at its own address: it is the name Schoology uses for every school.
    • Client Id: 8617959790
    • Deployment Id: the Deployment ID you copied in step 1.
  3. Under Sign-in email domains, fill in both Student email domains and Teacher email domains (the same domain can go in both) and click Submit for approval. If every domain matches your organization’s verified website, the request is approved at once; otherwise Alps support reviews it. Teachers and students can sign in from Schoology once it is approved.
3

Add Alps to courses

Schoology System Administrator or teacher

Either add Alps to every course from App Center > Organization Apps > Install/Remove, or have each teacher add it to a course: in the course, click Install Your App(s), tick Alps by 2Sigma and click Submit. Alps then appears in the course’s left navigation.

4

Star a default grade category

Teacher, once per course, before the first Alps assignment

In the Schoology course, open Grade Setup, add a grading category (for example “Alps”) and click its star to make it the default.

Schoology puts each Alps assignment into the course’s default category. If the course has no default category, Schoology files the column under (Ungraded) instead, where scores don’t show. Setting the default first avoids that.

5

Open Alps and link the class

Teacher, once per course

  1. In the course’s left navigation, click Alps by 2Sigma. Alps opens in a new window, so allow pop-ups for Schoology if your browser blocks it.
  2. If the course isn’t linked yet, Alps asks you to link it to an Alps class you teach that isn’t linked to a course yet, or to create a new class by choosing a curriculum and naming the class.
  3. To bring in your students, open the class’s People page in Alps, open the Connected menu and choose Resync list. Students are also added the first time they open Alps from the course.
6

Assign and grade

Teacher

Create coursework in Alps, assign it to your students and publish it.

  • A column with the same name appears in the Schoology gradebook, in the default category.
  • Per-group coursework gets one column for all its groups.
  • Growth Stream coursework gets no column.
  • Unpublishing coursework in Alps doesn’t hide its Schoology column.
  • Scores sync back when students submit, marked as provisional, and again as final once the coursework is graded.
  • Block project grades that Alps suggests sync once you review them.

Students open Alps from the same left-navigation link. Schoology signs them in, so they have no Alps password to remember.
