Privacy Policy

Updated: August 9, 2026

Thank you for visiting the website (the “Site”) of ALPS by 2Sigma ("ALPS", “2Sigma School”, “we”, “us”, and/or “our”). ALPS is an educational technology platform licensed to schools, districts, and higher-education institutions. Learner accounts are created and authorized by the licensing institution. Learners of any age may be enrolled by their institution; additional protections apply to learners under 13, as set out in the Children section below. This Privacy Policy sets forth our policy with respect to the information collected from visitors and users of our Services. Capitalized terms not defined in this Privacy Policy have the meaning as set forth in the Terms of Service for the Services, which can be found at https://alps.2sigma.us/w/terms.

We are committed to protecting your privacy. Our privacy policy outlines what information we collect from you, how we use that information, and what choices you have regarding how and whether we can use your information. Because 2Sigma School is a learning environment for children, we take additional measures to safeguard children's privacy, including for children under the age of 13. Please see our children's privacy policy below, which further outlines our approach.

If you access the Site or Services outside the United States, you consent to the transfer of your Personal Information (as defined below) to the United States, which may have less protections than your jurisdiction of residence.

When you interact with us through the Services, we may collect information that, alone or in combination could be used to identify you (“Personal Information“) and other information about you, as further described below:

  • Interactions with the platform, including responses, progress, and engagement with curricular materials.

For Teachers and School Administrators:

  • Name;
  • Email address;
  • Affiliation with the school at which they teach;
  • School name and address;
  • Course(s) taught;

  • Identifiers for teachers in Learning Management Systems or other storage systems connected to our services;
  • Browser and network identifiers that teachers connect from;
  • Information voluntarily provided through surveys, feedback requests, and reviews; and
  • Interactions with the platform, including responses, progress, and engagement with curricular materials.

By voluntarily providing us with Personal Data, you are consenting to our use of it in accordance with this Privacy Policy. If you provide Personal Data to our Services, you acknowledge and agree that such Personal Data may be transferred from your current location to our offices and servers and the authorized third parties referred to herein.

Information we collect automatically when you use our Service:

Log Data: When you interact with us through the Site or use our Services, we receive and log certain data automatically. We may store such passively collected data itself or such information may be included in databases owned and maintained by our affiliates, agents or service providers. We may use such information and pool it with other information to track, for example, details about your interactions with our Service including date, time, length of visit, and specific sections of pages, videos, and other learning content accessed during your visits. We use this information to help us improve our website and learning content, and assess student engagement with the learning content.

Third-Party System Data: When you use ALPS (Adaptive Learning Platform for Schools / Students), we may ask your consent to give us permission to access data from third-party systems on your behalf. This may include Learning Management Systems (LMS) such as Canvas, Schoology, Google Classroom,, or Google Workspace. We may access these systems on your behalf to retrieve Content you have created such as assignments, assignment submissions (“Your Content”). We may post content and coursework for you directly in those systems, update their properties, and read / update your grades in LMS systems, based on your Content in our platforms and services. Your Content may be stored on our systems to enable proper operation of services that depend on access to Your Content and to help improve the quality of services provided to you. You retain ownership of and responsibility for Your Content. If you are posting anything you did not create yourself or do not own the rights to, you agree that you are responsible for any Content you post; and that you will fully comply with any third-party licenses relating to Content you post. We do not use Google Workspace APIs to develop, improve, or train generalized AI/ML models.

Because you retain ownership of and responsibility for Your Content, you grant us - and other 2Sigma School Users - certain legal permissions, outlined below, without expectation of any payment for any of the rights granted in this section. The licenses you grant to us will end when you remove Your Content from our servers, unless other Users have copied it.

Cookies: In operating our Sites, we and third parties that provide certain functionality to the ALPS by 2Sigma Services may use a technology called "cookies." A cookie is a text file that the computer that hosts our Services gives to your browser when you access the Site. Our cookies help provide additional functionality to our Services and help us analyze Site usage more accurately. You can disable cookies, limit the types of cookies you allow, or set your browser to notify you when cookies are used. For more information about our use of cookies, please see the section entitled “Cookie Policy,” below.

De-identified and Aggregated Data: We may create de-identified and aggregated data from Personal Data and platform activity, including submitted coursework, and use it to operate, secure, evaluate, and improve the Services — including to develop, train, and evaluate the machine-learning models that power them — and to conduct educational research. We may share de-identified data for educational research, and only under a written agreement that limits its use to the stated research purpose, prohibits re-identification and onward disclosure, and requires its deletion when the research concludes. De-identified data is data from which direct and indirect identifiers have been removed such that it cannot reasonably be used to identify a learner or an educator. We do not attempt to re-identify it, do not permit any recipient to do so, do not sell it, and do not use it for advertising. Sharing de-identified data for educational research under the written agreement described above is not a sale. We do not publish or disclose it in any form that could reasonably identify a learner, an educator, or a group small enough to reveal an individual.

Site Analytics: We use third-party analytics tools on our public marketing website to understand how visitors find and use it. We do not use these tools for advertising, remarketing, or building advertising profiles, and they are not used inside the signed-in learning platform.

User-generated Content: Learners create content as part of their coursework — code, written responses, notes, and, where an educator enables it, comments or discussion posts. This is student work, and much of it is an education record under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (“FERPA”). It is visible to the learner's own educators by default.

Sharing beyond that is off by default and is controlled by the institution and its educators, not by us. Where an educator enables a shared or class-visible space, content posted there can be seen by others in that class or institution. Where an institution enables public sharing of code or activities, a learner or educator who chooses to publish an item makes it visible to other users of the Service, who may make their own copies of it; that choice is per item, is not the default, and can be reversed by unpublishing the item.

Publishing an item grants other users of the Service a non-exclusive license to view and use it through the Service for educational purposes only, and that license ends when the item is unpublished, except for copies others have already made. We do not apply any license to student work that has not been deliberately published, and we do not make student work public on a learner's behalf. If you upload content you did not create, you are responsible for holding the rights needed for the visibility you choose.

HOW WE USE YOUR INFORMATION

We use your information to:

  • Provide and maintain the ALPS Services;
  • Support teaching and learning by enabling teachers to view student progress;
  • Process payment for the Services, whether paid by an institution, by a learner or another entity on their behalf;
  • Respond to support requests and inquiries;
  • Ensure compliance with school licensing agreements and applicable laws;
  • Improve our platform, content, and pedagogy; and
  • Analyze Site and Service usage.

2Sigma School may use the contact details of educators and administrators to tell them about services we believe will be of interest to them. We do not send marketing communications to learners. If we do so, each promotional communication we send you will contain instructions permitting you to "opt-out" of receiving future promotional information. In addition, if at any time you wish not to receive any future communications or you wish to have your name deleted from our mailing lists, please contact us at support@2sigma.school. Please note that we will continue to contact you via email and/or SMS to respond to requests and provide our Services.

STORAGE

Your information, including Personal Data, may be transferred to — and maintained on — computers located outside of your state, province, country or other governmental jurisdiction where the data protection laws may differ than those from your jurisdiction. If you are located outside the United States and choose to provide information to us, please note that we transfer the data, including Personal Data, to the United States and process it there.

WE DO NOT SELL PERSONAL DATA

We do not sell Personal Data, and we never sell student data. We do not rent, trade, or otherwise disclose Personal Data for consideration; we do not use student data for targeted or behavioral advertising or to build an advertising profile; we do not create a commercial profile of a learner for any purpose other than the educational purpose the institution has authorized; and we do not use identifiable student data to train, fine-tune, or evaluate AI models, nor do we permit any third-party model provider to train on it. We may use de-identified data for model development and research as described under De-identified and Aggregated Data above. These commitments apply to every institution and learner using the Services, not only where law requires them.

OUR DISCLOSURE OF YOUR PERSONAL DATA AND OTHER INFORMATION

We may share your Personal Data with certain third parties without further notice to you, as set forth below:

With Schools: We share information with the school licensing ALPS, including student progress and course activity.

Business Transfers: If we are involved in a merger, acquisition, reorganization, bankruptcy, receivership, sale of company assets, or transition of service to another provider, information may be transferred to a successor or affiliate as part of that transaction. Any successor is bound by the commitments in this Privacy Policy for the data it receives, including the commitments not to sell student data, not to use it for advertising, and not to use identifiable student data to train AI models. We do not disclose student data as part of financing or investor due diligence; where a transaction requires diligence, we provide de-identified or aggregated information only.

Vendors and Service Providers: We engage third party vendors and service providers to perform certain functions on our behalf (such as payment processing, learning assessment, and so on). These providers only access information necessary to perform their services.

Legal Requirements: We may disclose your Personal Data if required to do so by law or in the good faith belief that such action is necessary to (i) comply with a legal obligation, (ii) protect and defend the rights or property of 2Sigma School, (iii) act in urgent circumstances to protect the personal safety of users of the Site or the public, or (iv) protect against legal liability.

Public Forums and Publicly Available Content: We may offer features that allow our students to share content in public or semi-public spaces. These are optional features, but if Students use them, they should do so under good judgment. Information they disclose in such areas of our Service may be read, collected, stored, or used by others. We do not systematically monitor the content of information that is published in the Public Forums.

We may share aggregated or de-identified information, which cannot reasonably be used to identify you, for various purposes including compliance with various reporting obligations; for business or marketing purposes; or to assist third parties in understanding our users' interests, habits, and usage patterns for certain content, services, programs, advertising and promotional purposes, and/or functionality available through our Service.

CHILDREN

This section explains our information collection, disclosure, parental consent practices and parental choice procedures with respect to information provided by children under the age of 13 (“Child” or “Children”). This policy is in accordance with the U.S. Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (“COPPA”), and outlines our practices in the United States regarding Children's personal information. For more information about COPPA and general tips about protecting Children's online privacy, please visit OnGuard Online.

ALPS is licensed to schools, districts, and institutions for use in educational settings. Where an institution licenses ALPS, learner accounts are created and authorized by that institution — through an administrator, a roster integration, or a class join link issued by an educator — and learners do not create their own accounts by that route. Where we offer direct registration, a learner aged 13 or older may register themselves, and a child under 13 may be registered only by a parent or legal guardian — in which case we obtain consent from that parent or guardian, in the manner applicable law requires, before collecting personal information from the child, and the parent or guardian may review, correct, or delete it, or withdraw consent, at any time. Where learners under 13 use ALPS through an institution, we rely on the school consent mechanism recognized under COPPA: the institution provides consent on behalf of parents for the collection of Personal Data used solely for educational purposes authorized by the institution and for no other commercial purpose. The institution is responsible for determining that school consent is sufficient for its learners and for giving any parental notice its own policy or state law requires.

Collection: Learner information reaches us from the institution — name, school email address, grade or year level, enrolled sections, and time zone — or from a roster or learning management system the institution connects. We do not request home addresses, telephone numbers, geolocation, photographs, biometric identifiers, health, disability, discipline, or meal-status data, and we do not request them from a roster integration. Beyond that, we collect the work a learner submits and their interactions with the platform, as described above.

Use and Disclosure: A Child's Personal Data is used to provide the learning service the institution has authorized — delivering coursework, grading it, and reporting progress to their educators and administrators. We do not sell it, do not use it for advertising or to build an advertising profile, and do not use it in identifiable form to train AI models. Third parties that process it on our behalf are named in a sub-processor list we provide on request. Work a learner submits is visible to their educators. Whether it is visible to classmates depends on sharing settings the institution and its educators control; see User-generated Content above.

Parental Choices and Controls: At any time, you can refuse to permit us to collect further Personal Data from your Children in association with your account, and can request that we delete from our records the Personal Data we have collected in connection with that account. Please keep in mind that a request to delete records may lead to a termination of an account, membership, or other service. You may update your Child's information by logging onto your account. You can contact 2Sigma School to request access to, change, or delete your Child's personal information by sending an email to us at privacy@2sigma.school. A valid request to delete personal information will be accommodated within a reasonable time. In addition to the foregoing, we will exercise commercially reasonable efforts to delete personal information belonging to Children when it is no longer needed for the purpose for which it was collected.

DATA RETENTION

We retain student and teacher data for as long as necessary to provide services and allow ongoing access to course work, unless the school requests anonymization or deletion. Data may be retained longer where legally required. We will retain and use your Personal Data to the extent necessary to comply with our legal obligations (for example, if we are required to retain your data to comply with applicable laws), resolve disputes, and enforce our legal agreements and policies.

This Privacy Policy applies only to the 2Sigma School Services. The Services may contain links to other websites not operated or controlled by us (the “Third Party Sites”). The policies and procedures we describe here do not apply to the Third Party Sites. The links from our Services do not imply that we endorse or have reviewed the Third Party Sites. We suggest contacting those sites directly for information on their privacy policies.

COOKIE POLICY

What are cookies?

Cookies are small text files containing a string of characters that can be placed on your computer or mobile device that uniquely identify your browser or device.

What are cookies used for?

Cookies allow a site or services to know if your computer or device has visited that site or service before. Cookies can then be used to help understand how the site or service is being used, help you navigate between pages efficiently, help remember your preferences, and generally improve your browsing experience. Cookies can also help ensure marketing you see online is more relevant to you and your interests.

What types of cookies do we use?

Cookies are commonly grouped into “Strictly Necessary,” “Performance,” “Functionality,” and “Targeting” categories. We use only the first three. We do not use Targeting cookies, and we do not permit advertising networks to set cookies through the Services. You can find out more about each category we use below.

  1. Strictly Necessary Cookies. These cookies are essential, as they enable you to move around the Service and use its features, such as accessing logged in or secure areas. Because these cookies are essential, they cannot be disabled.
  2. Performance Cookies. These cookies collect information about how you have used the Service, for example, information related to the unique username you have provided, so that less strain is placed on our backend infrastructure. These cookies may also be used to allow us to know that you have logged in so that we can serve you fresher content than a user who has never logged in. We also use cookies to track aggregate Service usage in an anonymized fashion and experiment with new features and changes on the Service. The information collected is used to improve how the Service works.
  3. Functionality Cookies. These cookies allow us to remember how you're logged in, whether you chose to no longer see advertisements, when you logged in or out, and the state or history of Service tools you've used. These cookies also allow us to tailor the Service to provide enhanced features and content for you and to remember how you've customized the Service in other ways. The information these cookies collect are anonymous, and they are not used to track your browsing activity on other sites or services.
  4. Targeting Cookies. Not used. We do not serve advertising through the Services, do not share Personal Data with advertisers or advertising networks, and do not track your activity across other sites or services for advertising purposes.

How long will cookies stay on my device?

The length of time a cookie will stay on your computer or mobile device depends on whether it is a “persistent” or “session” cookie. Session cookies will only stay on your device until you stop browsing. Persistent cookies stay on your computer or mobile device until they expire or are deleted.

You can instruct your browser to refuse all cookies or to indicate when a cookie is being sent. However, if you do not accept cookies, you may not be able to use some portions of our Services.
