Live Activity

Know who needs you while class is still on.

Live Activity shows who is working, reading or stopped, and who has stalled and needs you first.

See where the class is stuck on a question or a project, look back at any class period, or see a week or a month of the class at a glance.

One class, right now and over a week

Watch a student stall and get flagged, find where the class is stuck, then look back.

A scripted walkthrough with sample students. The screens are the ones teachers use.

Right now

Walk to the student who needs you

Every student has one state, from the last thing Alps recorded for them. The ones who have stalled rise to the top.

Live Activity in the List layout: each student with a state such as Working now, Reading, Stopped or Hasn't started, a bar of activity over the last 45 minutes, what they are working on, saves and runs, and a Needs attention panel listing the two flagged students.

Working, reading, or stopped

Each student reads Working now, Reading, Stopped, Hasn’t started or Not opened. Click a state to see only those students.

Flags on your terms

A student is flagged after no activity for 5 minutes, or 10 minutes on a question with nothing saved. Change either number for your class.

Who first

Needs attention lists flagged students, oldest flag first. Point at a flag to see what Alps recorded last.

Who is going well

A check shows a student whose current item is going well: three right in a row, tests passing, a project turned in. Never a ranking.

Their work, one click away

Click a name or an item to open the student’s work in a new tab. A project shows its newest picture right in the row.

From your phone

Walking the room? On a phone, each student is a card you tap to open.

Items

See where the whole class is stuck

Switch to Items for a row per question, reading or project the class touched. When three students stop on the same project, that usually points to the task, not the students.

  • ✓ How many are on it now, and how many worked on it
  • ✓ How many are flagged on it, with a line when three or more are
  • ✓ The typical time on it, and the class’s runs and checks
  • ✓ Hints opened, counted for the class, never per student
The Items layout: a row each for the Word counter coding exercise, the 2.3 if Statements questions, the Rock Paper Scissors project and the Conditionals reading, with On it now, Worked on it, Needs attention, Typical time, Runs and Checks, and Hints opened.
Looking back

Any class period, or a whole month

Missed what happened in third period, or want to see who has been showing up? Pick the span you need.

Past class in the Grid layout: a banner reading Past class, Tue, Sep 29, 10:00 to 10:45 AM, shown as it stood at 10:45 AM, over a tile per student. Each tile charts the period in two-minute bars, blue for time active and amber for reading, with a dot for who was working at the end, a reading mark, and a hatched flag on the tiles of a student who had stopped for 12 minutes and one who hadn't started.

One class period, as it stood at the bell

Pick a date, a start time and a length from 15 minutes to 3 hours, and see the class as it stood at the end: who was working, who had stopped, who never started. Read it as a list, or as a grid of tiles that fits a whole class on one screen. Whole day shows everyone who was active on a school day.

Multi-day over 30 days from Tue, Sep 8: for each student a stacked bar per day, time active in blue below time reading in amber, with weekends shaded, then Days active, Active, Reading, Saves, Runs and Last seen, with class quartiles tinting each count.

A week or a month at a glance

See 7 or 30 days, a bar per day for each student that stacks time active, in blue, under time spent reading, in amber, with days active, saves, runs and last seen beside it. Turn on class quartiles to see how each count compares, and click a name to open that student in the Gradebook.

Built to be fair to students

Signals, not judgments

Live Activity tells you where to look. It never tells you what a student is worth.

Activity, not learning

These signals show activity in Alps. A student reading a printed handout can look the same as one who stepped away, so a state is a reason to look, never a conclusion.

A flag is a moment

Flags describe a moment, not the student, and clear on their own when the student gets going again. Hints a student opened are context, never a flag.

Safe to put on a projector

Projector view hides names, pictures and flags and shuffles the tiles, so you can show the class its own progress without singling anyone out.

Students can see it too

Students can open a page that lists exactly what this screen shows their teacher about them.
